Understanding Substance Use Disorder (SUD) for First Responders

This 90-minute, virtual training provides first responders with a comprehensive understanding of Substance Use Disorder (SUD), equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to recognize, respond to, and support individuals struggling with substance use. The presentation explores the signs and symptoms of SUD, differentiates between substance abuse and a disorder, and examines the disease model of addiction. Participants will gain insight into how addiction affects family dynamics through the Family Mobile Concept and review key takeaways from Under the Influence by James Robert Milam and Katherine Ketcham. The session will conclude with practical applications tailored to first responders, including crisis intervention strategies, peer support techniques, and ways to reduce stigma within their field.
